March Finale

While Mommy was back in Atlanta painting Gabi's room, Gabi spent a week in Texas with Gramma Jane and Grampa. Uncle Brian and Uncle Stephen were both on Spring Break from college, so they helped entertain her. She had a blast!

Uncle Stephen and Gabi read a book --
one of Gabi's favorite activities!

Gabi loves to feel grown-up, and she likes to be able to help us do whatever we are doing.

Gabi's new phrase is "and then," although she doesn't really understand what it means. When we were on the road leaving South Carolina, we stopped to eat at a bar-b-que place where Mommy had a coupon for a free peach cobbler ala mode. The waitress brought out dessert before Gabi finished her dinner, and Gabi wanted ice cream. We told her that she needed to eat her chicken first, and Gabi declared, "And then, ice cream." Yes, we told her, and then ice cream. Gabi agreed to that and promptly reached for the ice cream.
"No, chicken first," we reminded her.
"AND THEN ice cream!" Gabi insisted. Back and forth went the conversation.
Us: "Eat your chicken first."
Gabi: "And then ice cream first!"
Us: "No, chicken first."
Gabi: "No chicken. And then ice cream first."
Obviously we had a communication break-down. It was rather amusing, or at least it would have been if it weren't so exasperating that she didn't know what she was saying. I have a feeling that Gramma Jane and Grampa avoided such discussions by just giving Gabi whatever she wanted... (Of course, mealtimes aren't usually difficult, as Gabi is a good eater. Her favorite foods include green beans, yellow squash, raisins, strawberries, cheese, yogurt, rice, cream of wheat, and other healthy choices.)

At the end of her week with grandparents, Daddy had an interview in Houston, so Gabi met him (and his friend George) at a city park after his interview. Before heading to the airport, they got to ride a little train, play with George's soccer ball, and look at the birds on the lake.

Back in Atlanta, Gabi jumped back into her social circles. In addition to school, gymnastics, and playgroup, Gabi attended a birthday party for one of her classmates, and of course we had our weekly friends at Mommy's mini-daycare.

Gabi measures 33 inches tall now!

Gramma Jane and Grampa came to visit for Daddy's Family Day at work, and Aunt Lisa and Uncle Kevin drove down from Tennessee that same weekend.

Oh Gabi, you're such a little stinker. Way to keep your parents on their toes...we need to chat soon. We'll set up a time with your mama to see you sometime soon. Sadly, we live 3 times zones away. Give your daddy a good luck hug. We're thinking about him and hoping you all get to stay in Atlanta!

While we do love Atlanta, we haven't decided which program we will rank #1 yet... There are so many great places that we would enjoy living. In alphabetical order: Atlanta, GA (Emory) is wonderful and we wouldn't have to move and Michael knows the people here. Charlseton, SC (MUSC) is a beautiful historic town on the coast with a strong program that focuses on training (even offering an extra degree for one extra year). Charlottesville, VA (UVa) is also a neat historic town in a beautiful area of the country, and their program is extremely stable and also offers an extra degree (and/or subspecialty training) for one extra year. Chicago, IL (McGaw MC of Northwestern) is a bustling city near Notre Dame (do we need any more reasons?) and Northwestern is a great school. Dallas, TX (UT Southwestern) would be close to family, has much flexibility in electives in subspecialty areas, and is the only program to focus on teaching fellows to be educators as well as clinicians and researchers. Durham, NC (Duke) has a highly-educated population, and the Duke name would help him get an academic job later. Houston, TX (Baylor) might possibly offer the best training of any program, has a strong history in shaping the field, and is not far from family. Minneapolis, MN (U of MN) actually also has a strong history in the field, the city is clean and lively, and it would be near Waldsee. This is not at all an exhaustive list of the pros of each place, just a little tidbit to illustrate what a difficult decision we will have when ranking the programs!

I love the pigtails!

We are praying for the entire family, and your upcoming program choice. When will you know, and how is it decided?

We will find out in mid-June (June 13th). It is a "match" -- so we submit our rank-order list of programs, and the programs submit their rank-order lists of applicants, and a computer assigns us the highest program on our rank order list that also ranked us, provided they have space.
