Gabi's 2nd Birthday

After much delay, here are pictures from Gabi's 2nd birthday... only a month and a half late (originally posted 4/12/07, but later redated)!

Lolo and Lola came to visit for Gabi's birthday. Gabi loved having the extra attention. Here, she delayed bedtime by carrying her penguin into the guest room and lying down with Lolo and Lola. She spent more time talking than resting, though, so we had to move her back to her room, much to the dismay of Lolo and Lola.

Gabi loved to show off all her new abilities. This is an action shot of Gabi dancing.

While Lolo and Lola were visiting, Daddy tested for his blue belt in kung fu. He passed. Yay Daddy!

Gabi got a new toy from Lolo and Lola, an Aquadoodle. Gabi was more interested in making handprints than in the big announcement...

Lolo and Lola got Gabi some mango-flavored ice cream and some barquillos (which Gabi calls "barkies"). It was a true Filipino treat.

Gabi also had fun begging for wedges of Clementine oranges, which Lolo was happy to provide for her. Another Filipino tradition... lots of family pictures with food.

Another birthday surprise courtesy of Lolo! Birthday balloons!

And from Tita and Tito: more books! Gabi insisted on reading all the books immediately.

February Summary

February was a busy month. Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what we did.

Martin came over to play every Thursday, as usual. Gabi and Martin are great friends, and they are learning to share and take turns. Here, Gabi is sharing her goldfish snack with Martin.

Gabi loves to wear pigtails!

Up until now, Gabi only knew how to open doors if she could twist the knob and push on the door. On the other side of the door, she was locked in the room. That made it easy to contain her in her room even after we moved her from her crib to her toddler bed. In February, she figured out how to twist-and-pull to open doors, and that opened a whole new world of freedom for her.

At night, she likes to get as close to us as possible to sleep. If we are awake, she will drag her pillow and stuffed animals towards us until she can see us. Then she'll take one step back (so we can't see her) and lie down on the floor to sleep. If we are asleep, she will come all the way to the edge of our bed and lie down beside us. If we lock our door, we'll find her in the hallway just outside the door in the morning. It's very cute, but I guess we need to put a baby gate up in the doorway to her room.

Gabi's favorite activity at gymnastics
is hanging and swinging on the rings.

One day, we took Ava with us to gymnastics class.

Stephen and Lisa's wedding
We traveled to Ohio for the wedding of one of Daddy's college roommates. The other three roommates were all groomsmen. It was a fun weekend, and Gabi loved seeing snow. She also discovered that snow is COLD.

Gabi was excited to eat ice cream, and
she sat very still for Daddy to put ribbons in her hair.
The ribbons didn't stay very well, unfortunately.

Gabi stayed up dancing at the reception until midnight!

Gabi ate some more dessert and told us she made a mess.

Gabi's 2nd Birthday
Of course, Gabi also celebrated her 2nd birthday in February. Lolo and Lola came to visit for the occassion. We'll post pictures soon!

2 Years Old!

Today is Gabi's Birthday! Happy Birthday Gabi!

We were busy celebrating with our little lady today, but we should have lots of pictures from this weekend. Lolo and Lola came to visit and were snapping pictures eagerly.

That's all for now.

Back in January...

Gabi and Martin continue to be good friends, since Martin comes over to play every Thursday. Daddy likes to refer to Martin as "Gabi's boyfriend."

This year, Gabi started taking gymnastics. She loves it! It is amazing to watch her progress, too. On the first day, she was scared of everything except the balance beam, and I was convinced the classes were a waste of money.

On the second day, she started swinging on the rings (well, rocking back and forth while holding onto the rings, but without pulling her feet off the ground). She is so little that her feet fit side-by-side on the balance beam, so to encourage her to take steps on the balance beam rather than just shuffle her feet forward, the instructor placed bean bags on the balance beam for Gabi to step over. Gabi was still too scared to stand or even sit on the trampoline, but the instructor helped her lie down on her tummy and kick her legs and drum her arms to get used to the vibration.

At the third class, she grabbed the rings and lifted her legs and spent most of the class swinging back and forth. She also started tumbling on the floor and got slightly braver on the trampoline. Now she will run back and forth on the trampoline, which is great for developing balance, and she climbs on the rock wall and hangs from the bars and does all sorts of tricks!

Gabi's first day at gymnastics class.

Gabi has become a bit finicky about bedtime. Sometimes if she doesn't want to go to bed, she will pull her pillow onto the floor and lie on the floor to sleep instead of staying in bed. Once, she crawled out of bed and climbed into the rocking chair during naptime. Of course, that was before she learned how to open the door to her room... Now she'll drag her pillow and bear into the hallway instead.

Gabi received an alpaca sweater from Peru for Christmas, and her friend Sam also has a Perusian alpaca sweater!

North Carolina
At the end of January, we drove to Boone, NC to visit our friend Joe. Our friend Katie even drove up from High Point, NC to meet us! It was a fun weekend. Joe spent a couple years with the Peace Corp in Tanzania, so he has lots of African artwork decorating his place.

Can you find the giant sponge from Florida?

Gabi loved playing with Joe's hat collection and his lion.

How fun! It makes noise!

Learning

Names
Gabi loves that everything has a name. She knows that Mommy's name is "Missa" and Daddy's name is "Ma-chl." She can tell you that her name is "Gabi Twaco." She recognizes all the capital letters in GABI and is working on the letters in her last name.

Gabi knows the names of all these animal friends and baby dolls, too.

Curious George, Tigger, Zaggy, Asha & her Teddy, Baby Ella,
Joey, Claire Bear, Ashley Bear, Rabbit, Penguin, and Gabi

Gabi also knows the names of her playgroup friends and her preschool classmates. It is fun to listen to her tell us who she played with each day.

Amusingly, Gabi also identifies the word "trouble" with herself. If she hears me say "trouble" then she will point to herself and exclaim, "Name!" Maybe I should stop commenting, "I should have named you trouble," whenever she gets into something she shouldn't...

Ashley Bear is Gabi's favorite for nighttime snuggling.

Books
Gabi loves to read books. Last July or August, she started "reading" her first book herself. Feathers is a book about birds, and it just names each bird and writes out the bird's call -- so each page says something like this: "Bluebird. Tru-ly, tru-ly!" or "Kookaburra. Ha-ha-ha!" Our favorite is the Cardinal, since we have them in our backyard and can hear them sing "Birrrdy birrrrdy chip-chip-chip!"

Many of Gabi's most-requested books are featured in these pictures.

Last Fall, Gabi memorized a few more books. The next book that Gabi started reading herself was Hop on Pop. She just "read" the main "vocab words" preceeding each sentence, so we'd hear something like this: "CUP PUP. BALL WALL. ALL FALL. HIM JIM. PAT SAT. PAT CAT. WALK WALK. WALK TALK. SAY SAY."

Gabi then learned the words to Green Eggs and Ham. As she flipped through the story, she would look at the pictures and say, "I am Sam. Eggs. Oh, ham! Do not like them. House, mouse. Box, fox. Train. Rain. Splash! Eggs, oh Ham. Yummy." (Our version of this book isn't a board book, so she didn't always turn pages one at a time, especially towards the end.)

More recently, Gabi memorized some of the words to Go Dog, Go! Gabi's other favorite books include Baby Beluga (which she can sing the appropriate tune for, even though the only words she knows are the title words) and Fox in Socks (her favorite page being the "brick trick" page) and "Caterpillar" (better known as The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and Click, Clack, Moo -- Cows That Type.

At Christmastime, she fell in love with "Grinch" (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) and "Camel" (what she calls The Animals' Christmas Carol--there are camels in the story). In that latter book and others that have music written (such as Oh, my! Oh, my! Oh, dinosaurs!), she recognizes the music staff and notes as a song and tells me to sing.

Here, Gabi is reading Rainbow Fish,
another book that she mostly only knows the title words for.

Letters
Two of Gabi's favorite songs have the same tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and the alphabet song. Gabi is working hard to get all the words straight, but she definitely has that Mozart melody down.

Gabi is fascinated with the ABCs, so she loves all her phonics toys (some old, some Christmas presents, some hand-me-downs... but all fun).

Gabi loves to press the letters on her phonics toys and hear the letter name, letter sound, and a word that uses that letter. Since she repeats the given words, these phonics toys seem to have augmented her vocabulary incredibly, although I'm not sure that she knows what words like "inchworm" mean. She can tell you some of the words that begin with various letters, though, so she must be learning something.

"Vroom! Vroom! School bus!"

Clean Up!
Gabi loves to be helpful around the house. When we are unloading groceries, Gabi will pull items out of the bags and hand them to me to put away. Then, of course, she will cheer for herself. :)

She also is good about helping clean up. Depending on the type of cleaning, Gabi sings either "Dust, dust, dust" from her Milk & Cookies Kindermusik class (for dusting, wiping, scrubbing, etc.) or the clean-up song they use in preschool (for picking up toys).

"Dust, dust, dust!"

Prayers
Gabi is also learning to pray. Sometimes she will remind us to say prayers before a meal. At school, they must say the typical preschool prayer before snack, because Gabi started praying like this: "God is good. MMMMM... food! AH-men."
